    We woke them up for breakfast and they fell asleep while waiting for their bagels to toast. Perhaps we should have done a better job transitioning back to these early mornings. Also, I already have one home with me today due to a fever. Two days, I got. Two days! I mean, I hope he feels better soon. 2nd, 4th, 2nd. Walking back after dropping them off Andy gave me a high-five and said, "You have until 3!" (Turns out working from home with kids at home, even when they're older, is difficult. I've been counting down the days.) And then I cried. Motherhood is complex. My dad has practically fed us all month with garden treasures: zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans and now, cantaloupe. This year he's also made relish, pickles and salsa (which is not pictured because it's half gone). Still, in retirement, he's one of the hardest workers I know. For 7 years we've cooked with only one large burner. I don't know why we never called someone. When the boys were little everything not a necessity was put off. And I didn't think about it, really, until I needed both burners and I would whine as my meal took longer to prepare, vow to call someone in the morning and then promptly forget while brewing coffee and the blur of a new day began. This week Andy order a new radiant surface element for $92 on Amazon. It arrived two days later and he spent an hour installing it. And it's fixed. The old one had tiny little cracks in the clay causing minuscule breaks. All those years, all those meals. And this was the fix. We've reached the point in summer in which squirrels eating flowers one story up is entertainment. #aug16 Nature shop. The dandelion cost me a nickel. And the shelving was quite precarious. Apparently paper gowns at the pediatrician's office are hilarious. This kid is 7 and this week I discovered he's never husked an ear of corn. I'm failing as a parent. (Also, there are two 7 year olds who will be husking all our corn throughout these sweet end-of-summer months.) We buy floss in bulk. Sometime in the last five years bridges have begun to freak me out. (Why?) But we walked across this beauty last week. And I didn't freak out. Mostly. Maybe a little. way better than the strip mall salon working in Pop Pop's garden sunset over the dunes, Huntington Beach State Park (Andy is no longer listening to my arguments about why we should move) Seashell ornaments decorating an empty beach. Humans can be lovely sometimes. We fell in love with long night walks on the empty beach. The first was a pleasant surprise because James, in particular, was such a disaster that same morning, during our sunrise walk. (At one point he was so grumpy and annoyed with us that he tried to run away. As I watched him run straight into a family's professional photo shoot I began yelling "Run AROUND the photographer! AROUND her!" He turned around, fists clenched, and ran past us, the other direction.) Turns out he's not a morning person. Also, it was this night I saw a huge shooting star.
